Gene Francis Alan Pitney (February 17, 1940 – April 5, 2006) was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and sound engineer who worked in the music industry for almost three decades. As a recording artist, he had success on both sides of the Atlantic until the mid-1960s. He was also among the group of early 1960s American artists that continued to have hit records after the British Invasion. Pitney has 16 Top-40 singles in the United States, with four of them reaching the Top In the United Kingdom, he had 22 Top-40 hits and 11 songs that reached the Top Ten. In addition, he penned the early 1960s successes “Rubber Ball,” which was sung by Bobby Vee, “He’s a Rebel,” which was recorded by The Crystals, and “Hello Mary Lou,” which was recorded by Ricky Nelson. In 2002, he became the first African-American to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
